Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress has recently had a rather nasty public discourse with Chris Pearson, a WordPress Theme developer. If you don’t know about it, you can see it here. But basically it is about Pearson’s alleged violation of the GPL for WordPress. A lot of windy discussions have prevailed from both sides of the camp.
My issue is not whether there is a breach of the GPL license, but the totally unprofessional way Matt Mullenweg has handled himself throughout the whole sordid affair. Matt, who has a lot of influence and power on the web, has shown in glaring lights, that he lacks discipline and the professionalism to be a good businessman.
To start with, this so-called breach of GPL issue would not have gone public, but would of been kept in-house, if a professional was handling the issue. But his rhetoric shows that he lacks confidence and has issues with confrontation. Matt also, unashamedly, promotes “selected” developers, whilst neglecting the others. In the position that he holds, a groomed professional would remain neutral and show favor to none(well, not in public, anyway). But pandering to the rich and infamous is a regular past-time for Mullenweg, who always loves to namedrop. Humility is certainly not his strong point.
Mullenweg is just a boy(only 26) trying to make it the world of business. But for the position he holds, and the responsibilities he has, he needs to rethink his approach, if he wants to be taken seriously.
